Japan Hits Historic Milestone: Over 42 Million Foreign Visitors in 2025

Introduction
Japan’s tourism and international exchange have reached an unprecedented peak. According to the latest 2025 (Reiwa 7) statistics released by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, the country has officially shattered previous records, signaling a robust new era for inbound travel.
A Historic Breakthrough: The 40 Million Mark
For the first time in history, the number of foreign nationals entering Japan has surpassed the 40 million mark. In 2025, total foreign entrants reached 42,430,930, a significant 15.4% increase compared to the previous year.
If we include "Special Landing Permits"—such as those for cruise ship passengers (approx. 4.05 million)—the total number of foreign arrivals reached a staggering 46.48 million.
Top Source Markets: Asia Leads the Way
The surge is largely driven by neighboring Asian countries. The top three source markets for new entries are:
South Korea: 9.23 million (Top contributor)
China: 7.22 million (A massive 31.7% increase from the previous year)
Taiwan: 6.39 million
The remarkable recovery and expansion of the Chinese market have been a primary catalyst for this record-breaking year.
Purpose of Entry: Tourism, Education, and Labor
While "Short-term Stay" (tourism and business) accounts for the vast majority (98.1%) of all new entries, other categories also showed steady growth:
Student Visas: 176,119 entries (Up 5.4%)
Technical Intern Training: 157,217 entries (Up 6.3%)
This data indicates that Japan remains a highly attractive destination not only for leisure but also as a place for global talent to learn and work.
Japanese Travelers on the Rise
The trend isn't only about people coming to Japan. Despite economic factors like the exchange rate, Japanese citizens are also heading abroad in higher numbers. In 2025, 14.73 million Japanese nationals traveled overseas, a 13.3% increase from the prior year.
Conclusion
The 2025 statistics confirm Japan's status as a global tourism powerhouse. As the number of visitors continues to climb, the focus now shifts toward sustainable tourism and the continued integration of international residents into Japan's social and economic fabric.
