Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by the recent Kumamoto earthquake. We hope for the safety and well-being of all those impacted, and for a swift and steady recovery for the region.

In light of the disaster, Japan's Immigration Services Agency (ISA) has announced special measures for foreign residents whose residence-related applications have been, or may be, affected by the earthquake. Below is a summary of the announcement, originally published by the ISA in July, Reiwa 8 (2026).

Who This Notice Is For

This notice applies to anyone who, because of the Kumamoto earthquake, is unable — or was unable — to submit an application to a Regional Immigration Services Bureau within the normally required period or through the normal procedures.

1. Application Deadlines for Residence-Related Procedures

If you were unable to submit your application within your period of stay because you were affected by the disaster, the Immigration Services Agency will, for the time being, continue to handle your case individually even if your period of stay has already expired. If this applies to you, please visit your nearest immigration bureau to consult about submitting your application.

2. Where to Submit Your Application

If you have temporarily relocated or evacuated from your usual place of residence because of the disaster, you may submit your application at the immigration bureau that has jurisdiction over the area where you are currently staying — not necessarily the one covering your registered address.

Questions or Further Information

If you have any questions about these arrangements, please contact your nearest Regional Immigration Services Bureau. A list of bureau locations and contact information is available on the ISA website:
