⚠️ Important Update: Delays in Receiving Residence Cards by Mail (As of April 2026)

If you are currently renewing your visa or changing your status via the Immigration Online System, please take note of a significant delay regarding the delivery of new Residence Cards.
The Situation
As of April 17, 2026, if you select "By Mail" (郵送) as your delivery method, it is taking approximately two weeks for the Residence Card to reach you.
This 14-day countdown starts from the moment you mail your required documents to the Immigration Bureau (Odaiba Branch) after receiving your "Examination Completed" notification.
Our Recommendation: Choose "At the Counter"
If you are in a hurry or your current card is expiring soon, we strongly recommend selecting "At the Counter" (窓口) as your receipt method when applying. Picking it up in person remains the fastest way to get your new card.
Can I Change My Method After Applying?
Yes, but only if you act fast! Here is how to check if you can still switch:
You CAN change to "At the Counter" if:
Your status in the "Inquiry on Application Details" section still shows as "Application Completed" (申請完了) or "Under Examination" (審査中).
You CANNOT change it if:
Your status already shows as "Completed" (完了) and you have received the "Notification regarding completion of examination" email.
Note: If you have already received the completion email and selected mail, you must send your documents and wait for the delivery. Immigration cannot change the method at this stage.
Summary Table
Status | Possible to change to "Counter"? |
Application Completed / Under Examination | YES |
Completed (Email received) | NO |
Pro Tip: If you have travel plans or need your new card for a bank procedure soon, avoid the mailing option for the time being!
